Amazon vs Flipkart vs Meesho: Which Keeps You More Profit?
- Each marketplace charges differently: a referral or commission fee based on category, plus shipping or logistics, plus (on some) a fixed packing or closing fee.
- The same product can be more profitable on one marketplace than another, depending on its weight, category and your packaging cost.
- Meesho's model shifts more of the shipping cost onto sellers by weight slab, so light, small items usually do better there.
- Amazon and Flipkart's fulfilment options (FBA / Flipkart-assured) cost more per order but can bring more orders, so compare profit per order, not just the fee percentage.
- There's no single "best" marketplace. Calculate your real margin per product on each one before deciding where to focus.
Sellers ask us this constantly: "Should I sell on Amazon, Flipkart or Meesho?" The honest answer is that it depends on your product, not on which marketplace is generally "better." Each one charges sellers differently, and those differences can flip which platform is actually more profitable for your exact item.
How the three marketplaces charge sellers
You don't pay one simple fee anywhere. On every marketplace, a chunk of your selling price goes to a mix of these:
- Referral or commission fee: a percentage of the selling price, and it changes by category (clothing, electronics, home decor and so on are charged differently).
- Shipping or logistics fee: usually based on the weight and size of your packed product, not just the item itself.
- Fixed fees: some marketplaces add a flat closing fee or collection fee per order, on top of the percentage-based ones.
- Returns and RTO (return to origin): if a buyer returns the order or refuses delivery, you can lose the shipping cost both ways, and sometimes the product gets damaged in transit.
The exact percentages and slabs change from time to time and differ by category, so rather than quoting numbers that may be outdated by the time you read this, the real move is to check the current fee for your exact category before you price anything.
Where each marketplace tends to help or hurt
Amazon
Amazon's strength is reach and trust, especially for electronics, books and branded categories. If you use their fulfilment service, Amazon stores and ships for you, which costs more per order but usually brings faster delivery and more sales. For heavier or bulkier items, fulfilment and shipping fees can take a bigger bite, so it suits products with a healthy price point more than very low-cost items.
Flipkart
Flipkart works similarly to Amazon in structure and is strong for Indian-first categories like fashion, home and mobile accessories. Flipkart-assured style fulfilment has its own cost, similar to Amazon FBA. Flipkart's seller base skews more price-sensitive buyers in Tier 2/3 India, which can mean higher volume at a slightly lower average order value.
Meesho
Meesho built its model around zero or very low listing cost and reselling, with shipping charged to the seller by weight slab. This makes Meesho attractive for light, small, low-cost items (jewellery, small accessories, apparel) where shipping stays cheap relative to the price. For heavier or bulky products, Meesho's weight-based shipping can eat a bigger share of the margin than on Amazon or Flipkart.
A simple way to compare, product by product
Instead of asking "which marketplace is best," ask "what do I actually keep per order, on each one, for this specific product." The inputs are the same everywhere:
- Your making or buying cost
- The selling price you'd list at on each marketplace
- The packed weight (product + packaging)
- Roughly how much you'll spend on ads to get an order there
Plug the same product into each marketplace's fee structure and compare what's left. The marketplace with the highest "you keep" number for that product is the one to push harder, at least for that item.
This is exactly what our free TrueMargin calculator does: enter your cost, selling price, weight and packaging once, and it shows your real profit per order on Amazon, Flipkart and Meesho side by side, with no sign-up. We built it after hearing the same question from sellers over and over.
Don't decide on fees alone
A marketplace with a slightly lower fee isn't automatically better if it brings you fewer buyers, slower payouts, or more returns for your category. Fees decide your margin per order; traffic and buyer intent decide how many orders you get. The strongest sellers usually don't pick one marketplace, they list on two or three and let the per-product numbers tell them where to put their stock, ad budget and attention.
Common questions
Which marketplace is most profitable: Amazon, Flipkart or Meesho?
It depends on your specific product, weight and category, not the marketplace overall. Light, low-cost items often do better on Meesho because of its weight-based shipping; heavier or higher-priced items can do better on Amazon or Flipkart. Calculate your real margin per product on each one rather than assuming.
Why does the same product earn different profit on different marketplaces?
Each marketplace charges a different mix of referral/commission fee, shipping or logistics fee, and sometimes a fixed closing fee, and these vary by category and weight. The combination changes which marketplace keeps more money in your pocket for that specific product.
